Small Product Photography
![]()
Small product photography at first appears like it would be an easy
thing to do - simply set up a camera and point it at the product and
hit the shutter release button....but there really is more to it than that.
Lighting is critical for showing the detail of the product as well as
capturing the
correct color of the product (if you have ever taken photographs under
florescent lighting, you know that the florescent tubes cast a green shade
to your developed photograph. My lighting and digital manipulation does
not
allow that to happen.)
Most people are familiar with product photography in advertising - the
Sunday newspaper
alone has hundreds of images of dozens of products. The same with
catalogs, both printed
catalogs and Internet shopping catalogs.
But in addition to the above, there is also capturing other aspects of products
that
we use in our every
day lives that is important.
A few of those follow, many of which most people have never seen before.

Documentation of Product
Performance
This engine has over 139,000 miles (~223,000 kilometers) on it.
These three photos were taken outside in mid-winter during a light snow
fall with the subject
small product components still attached and functional under the hood of a
vehicle with
over 139,000 miles on it. Yes, they are color photographs but that many
miles loads a LOT of
dirt and grime onto automobile engine components.
Some subjects can not come to the studio, so the
studio goes to them instead.
(These are a very graphics intensive pages. The photographs
were intentionally left large for these so more detail remains with them.)
